Redbirds In Flight
60"
square
This is probably my favorite of all the quilts I have made. The center redbird blocks are ones that were found long after my grandmother died. My mother and
aunts were planning a family reunion and I was asked to "do something with these".  It started out as a small wallhanging, but as I worked, I kept thinking of all the things that reminded me of Mamaw. I added four corner triangles to enlarge it and trapuntoed clumps of the Irises that my grandmother loved, stretching out from the center into the corners. Then I quilted a fence with roses around the outer perimeter. Finally I added a border of Flying Geese. It now measures 60" square! When the guests arrived at the reunion, we gave each
person two raffle tickets. The organizers (of which I was one) took one ticket each. The youngest child able (which, coincidentally, was my "Darlin' Granbaby") reached in and chose the winning ticket. Imagine my surprise when it was MY ticket! Although it still makes me feel guilty, I let the rest of the family convince me to keep it. I honestly think my grandmother arranged for me to win it. She knew how hard I had worked on it and that it is the only thing I have from her. Thank you, Mamaw, I'll cherish it and pass it on to MY grandaughter.
